A tile-roofed villa with a big pool, palm trees and a tropical garden, in a quiet residential enclave just outside Sosúa. The host lives on site, bakes the bread and cakes for breakfast and, if you ask, cooks an Italian dinner. It's for travelers who want to unwind as if staying with friends, with the beach a few minutes' walk away.

B&B Pavillion sits in Playa Laguna, a residential area of villas east of Sosúa, on the stretch of coast that runs toward Cabarete. The streets are quiet and Playa Laguna is a few minutes away on foot; downtown Sosúa (El Batey) is 2.7 km and Cabarete 7.7 km in a straight line, so for nights out you'll want a taxi or a rental car.
It isn't a hotel with a lobby but a family villa: guests share the living room, the dining room and the pool area, and the owner, who speaks Spanish, English and Italian, takes care of breakfast, tips and everything else. One guest sums it up as "an oasis of peace on the outskirts of Sosúa."

Sosúa is a seaside town on the north coast with a sheltered bay of clear water, a few minutes from Puerto Plata's airport. Distances are in a straight line from the hotel; Cabarete, Puerto Plata and the Damajagua falls are easy day trips.

A crescent of sand between cliffs, with calm water and reefs just off the shore. It's the town beach, lined with restaurants and craft stalls, and the starting point for snorkeling and diving trips.

A small beach that formed naturally a few years ago in front of El Batey, Sosúa's tourist center. It's quieter than the main beach and a nice spot for sunset.

El Batey's streets are full of bars, restaurants and shops; across the bay, Los Charamicos is the most Dominican neighborhood, with corner stores and music. The small Jewish Museum remembers the refugees who founded the settlement in 1940.

The Caribbean's kitesurfing and windsurfing capital, about 15 minutes along the coast. In the afternoon the wind fills the sky with kites; at night, restaurants and bars set their tables on the sand.

The Caribbean's only cable car climbs Mount Isabel de Torres, topped by a Christ statue and a botanical garden. Below, the old town has Victorian houses, the Umbrella Street and the 16th-century San Felipe Fort.

A chain of waterfalls and pools on the Damajagua River that you hike up and then come down by jumping and sliding over natural rock chutes, with a helmet, life jacket and guide required.

Cibao Airport (43.2 km) has more flights from the United States and the Caribbean. It's 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min by car on the Santiago–Puerto Plata highway.
From Santo Domingo it's about 3.5 to 4 hours by car on the Autopista Duarte (toll road); from Punta Cana, about 5 hours. Caribe Tours runs daily buses from Santo Domingo and Santiago to Sosúa.
Guaguas (minibuses) run often along the coast road between Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete: wave one down and pay the conductor. They're cheap and fine by day; at night a taxi is better.
From the residential area you can walk to Playa Laguna; for El Batey and the town beaches, take a taxi, a motoconcho (motorbike taxi) or a car. Agree on the fare before you get on and ask for a helmet. The currency is the Dominican peso; there are ATMs in town and US dollars are accepted in many places, though change usually comes in pesos.
From Calle 1 in the Playa Laguna residential area. Straight-line distances, except where a walking time is given.

It's both the draw and the drawback: total quiet, but you'll need a taxi or car to reach El Batey or Cabarete.
Playa Laguna is calm and uncrowded, but the surf can be strong at times. For easy swimming, Sosúa Bay is a few minutes away by car.
The resident dog and cats roam the shared areas and sometimes wander up to the pool. Great if you love animals; keep it in mind if you have allergies.
Every room has it, but Expedia and Booking.com note it may cost extra per night. All rooms have a ceiling fan, Booking.com mentions mosquito screens, and one guest never even turned the A/C on.
